DCI staff participated in the first every "Out of the Darkness Walk" for Elk County, Pa, which was held on Saturday, September 24th, 2016.
The goal of the event was to bring the local community together to combat suicide in Elk County, surrounding counties, and across Pennsylvania. Individual walkers, teams, local businesses, and volunteers were all invited to participate.
Walking participants of Out of the Darkness Walks join the effort with hundreds of thousands of people to raise awareness and funds that allow the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to invest in new research, create educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support survivors of suicide loss. Thanks to Walkers and Donors, AFSP has been able to set a goal to reduce the annual suicide rate 20% by 2025. The Western PA chapter will use the money raised to bring those AFSP programs to our local communities in this part of the state.
