Dickinson Center, Inc. and Journey Health System Affiliate

Dickinson Center, Inc. (DCI) of Ridgway, Pa., and the Journey Health System (JHS) of Bradford, Pa. are proud to announce their new affiliation.

Heidi Thomas, Chief Executive Officer of Dickinson Center, and Richard Seager, President of Journey Health System presented before the court a petition for approval of affiliation, as recommended by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General.  The affiliation was approved at a hearing on 9/12/16.

This affiliation will greatly enhance our continuum of services. Dickinson Center is choosing to join the Journey Health System affiliation to strengthen our ability to sustain our mission into the future.
— Heidi Thomas, CEO of Dickinson Center.

The Journey Health System (JHS) is a nonprofit supporting organization that currently provides administrative support to Beacon Light Behavioral Health System, Beacon Light Adult Residential Services, Forest/Warren Mental Wellness Association, and Stairways Behavioral Health. The Journey Health System affiliates employ 1,200 men and women, provide services in 18 Pennsylvania counties, and generate $70 million annually. The Board of Directors of Journey Health System is comprised of representative board members from the affiliate organizations.

Under the arrangement, Mr. Seager will serve as CEO of the affiliated Support Corporation, and current DCI CEO Heidi Thomas will continue to operate Dickinson Center at the local level.  Dickinson Center, Inc. was established in 1958 as the Ridgway Area Psychiatric Center.  In 1981, the name was changed to Dickinson Mental Health Center, Inc. to honor its founder, Dr. Robert J. Dickinson. In March 2011, the name was changed to Dickinson Center, Inc. as part of the agency’s re-branding initiative. DCI is a provider of mental health, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and children’s prevention services in Elk, Cameron, Potter, McKean, Forest, Warren, Jefferson, and Clearfield counties.

“Under this partnership, we hope to provide Dickinson Center with the same opportunities currently provided to all of our affiliates,” said Mr. Seager.  “Our size allows greater bargaining power in health insurance and service reimbursement rate negotiations, enhanced ability to recruit and retain clinical experts, and centralized support departments to reduce costs for affiliates while providing unparalleled support for individual clinical service lines.”

Through affiliation, Dickinson Center will join other non-profits under the Journey Health System, to enhance DCI’s continuum of service. Dickinson Center will continue to maintain local governance and management of their respective clinical programs and services. Their current name and their Board of Directors will remain intact. DCI Board of Directors and administration will share an active role in governing the affiliated system, integrating administration with the Journey Health System in areas of finance, marketing and communications, information technology, plant and operations, human resources, clinical best practice consultation, among others. This affiliation will make the Journey Health System one of the largest and most comprehensive behavioral health service providers across the entire northwestern Pennsylvania region.
